Yes Michelle, some of them are a bit assertive, which is why you have not seen me using them.

But at least there were no "F..." words in them.

Seeing as a large proportion of EO contributors rate as (ahem), "elderly" - these contributors need to be aware of the acronyms used by seniors .... [;-)

FWIW: Forgot Where I Was

BTW: Bring The Wheelchair

ROFLCGU: Rolling On The Floor Laughing & Can't Get Up

IMHO: Is My Hearing-Aid On?

WTF: What's Today's Fish?

BYOT: Bring Your Own Teeth

GTG: Got to Groan

TGIF: Thank Goodness It's Four (P.M.)

FYI: For Your Indigestion

TTYL: Talk To You Louder

MILF: Meal I'd Like To Forget

LMDO: Laughing My Dentures Out

SUS: Speak Up, Sonny

WIWYA: When I Was Your Age

GOML: Get Off My Lawn

There are likely to be more, this is just a short list ... [:-)

Cheers, Ron.

Gooday, I just HATE these abbreviations, most times they are used, the originator has to explain the meaning anyway.
To me it is just another way of shortcutting and speeding up the pace of life, our language has become so badly mauled without these abbreviations, it does not take too much longer to write the actual words. My life is evaporating quickly enough without making these shortcuts. I find it to be just another erosion of Respect and consideration for my fellow human that we all learnt during my upbringing. I am aware this is not everybody’s opinion but I am very saddened by the general attitude of our last couple of generations. After all we have 24 hours in the day and it is a matter of how we manage these precious hours.
Apologies to those who may be offended.
Cheers,
Brooms 604.

FWIW, and TBP ("to be pedantic"), most of these offerings above are not acronyms. They are initialisms whose letters are pronounced separately.

An acronym must be pronounceable as a word. e.g. LOL, NATO and LASER are acronyms but LMAO and WTF are initialisms.
Oh, and "e.g." is neither. It is an abbreviation..... for "exempli gratia".

So there you go..... YLSNED ("you learn something new each day" eh?) LOL

Thanks, Allan
| iwas just about to write a note on lists of letters versus acronyms. Sadly the use of lists of letters is becoming more common as people either are lazy, think it is smart or just can't cannot write/speak the Queens English.

Yeah. Someone had to. Not sure it is internet slang though. Mostly young blokes driving old Patrols with it emblazoned on the top of the windscreen or back of the tray - "IMHO". And the answer is usually "no - you don't".

First time I was asked to explain it to my co pilot I got a thump on the arm and a response of " well there's no need to be like that, if you don't know just say so". "Tick tick tick - ah now I get it" Still waiting for the apology.

Situation Normal All Fouled Up.

There is also FUBAR - fouled up beyond any repair.

Obviously both used to describe moments of chaos

Interesting that you used the word "fouled" Michelle instead of the more-often used word with a 'k' in it.

I first heard this acronym about the end of WW ll as being credited to the American Army. Later I heard it often in the workshop used in an exasperated manner implying that things were in their usual mess. More recent usage has substituted another 'F' word which has now become a rather common expression.

Most internet etymology assertions regarding SNAFU use the term "f**k**g" but that expression was not so used in the 1940's so I would credit you with not just 'being polite' but also being more correct.

Well I have to add one my bosses used freqently back in the 80s. Was common once. Im sure somebody will remember it...

It is even more appropriate these days with useless government initiatives, political correctness and the multitude of non productive people flitting around on the fringes of society.

WOFTAM

any takers?
