Hi all
I am looking for any updates re travelling down from Emu to Maralinga via the Emu Road. According to Robin from Maralinga last October, meetings were being planned for early this year re opening up the road. Would like to know if anybody has heard if this happened or is it still to be arranged.
Regards
Mike

It hasn't reopened and won't in the foreseeable future (many years). Unfortunately that is a firm decision.

I think it is the Management committee's decision and absolute.

Stephen L may know - if he still hangs around EO

Hi Boobook

I am still here, but like desissions, they are not made by those concerned.

The last time we were out at Oak Valley, the locals there wanted their “Closed” Community made open to get kick off’s from the Maralinga boom, yet it has never happened.

It is a real pity with the Emu Road, as it is a great drive and according to Robin, the locals said that the Stonehenge was nothing to do with them, and now they claim it is??

Like all things, it might take a very long time, if ever to let people to travel this road. We are just very greatful that we have had the privilege to travel it 5 times.

Cheers

It is possible that an application to travel down the Voakes Hill to Cook road and then via Pine Valley (Lake Dey-Dey Road) might be successful.
Note though that the Voakes Hill Corner to Cook road has also had a detour imposed that takes it west to avoid the Aboriginal wells. The old route has been permanently closed.

It also adds about 260km to the trip to Emu. 460 instead of about 200km

The detour is also a very good bit of road and we sat on 90 to 100kmh on it

When I took the Maralinga tour in May, Robin talked about some ideas he had. These were plans to escort groups up and down that track.

Earlier today I sent an email to Robin, with a number of questions. The status of this idea was one of those questions. But he's noted for taking a long time to respond. So I might not have a reply for awhile.

I hope to drive the entire AB at some point. It would be nice to incorporate another visit to Maralinga via this road. I'm sure many parties traveling the AB would make the side trip if they could.

Fuel might be a challenge as it's no longer available from Maralinga Village (as it was in the good old days!!)
