I've got phone numbers I can call (via sat phone) for weather when in the outback and away from all signals, but I can't find a number I can call for news & sport results.

Anyone know of a number?

Knowing the weather forecast is an advantage in the outback but news and especially sports results, why would you want sports results, It has all happened and makes no difference at all to your life if on holiday. (or when at home)

You have all the numbers you need, I reckon.

No you’re wrong, he’s got all the numbers that you need.
He could have many reasons for wanting the information that he asked about.

Exactly. He may have a son/daughter playing in a grand final. may be part of a racehorse syndicate, May have a large wager going on an event. etc.etc. Maybe contact a mate who has access to the web and get results from him?

If it's THAT important to know what happened - with a son/daughter in the finals, I doubt I'd be heading away - I'd want to be right there!
If a racehorse syndicate, there's nothing can be done about the result - and to place a bet, surely that has to be done BEFORE the race, not after the results are in?

I’m with RMD on this subject. A weather forecast is most important. Sport and news well... Why can’t you just call your neighbor, your brother or your mother. Just store those numbers in your sat phone.

I chose to travel in remote areas to get away from things.

Free wifi in the Simpson anyone!!!

Cheers Greg

Sorry to have bothered you perfectly sensible people with my most insane question.

I wish I was as smart as you people. Just imagine, someone with a different set of requirements to yours, I really am a complete imbecile.

If you can't help, why comment? Except maybe to display your ability to waste everyone's time.

So there's your answer Saringo. It doesn't matter what you want. What is important is that others are happy not to hear a sports report or a news item so therefore you should also do the same!!! You may well have financial and personal reasons for asking the question....but that's irrelevant...

Hi Siringo, unfortunately i dont know of any such phone numbers.

But I built a device which can do that about 10 years as a project-it was used for a few years but is dismantled now. It was fun and worked well.

It was based on a dial up voice capable modem connected to an old pc running an Interactive Voice Response program. The IVR program could parse and convert text to speech from web pages, and also call up and play any audio files.

The dial up modem was connected to a fixed phone line. So you dialed the number, the pc answered and then you selected an option. Press 1 for weather, 2 for news, 3 for Jimi Hendrix etc.

There would be easier ways to do this nowadays. It would be interesting project for a IT student or enthusiast. The hardware to build one could be obtained very cheaply or free, and you can customise the voice options for your own specific needs, ie parse your own local newspaper or local sports web pages.

I am a new comer to this forum, and am surprised by the animosity to your query.

Bill - Don't be surprised - forums are full of cranky, belligerent old buggers, who treat all others as a lower form of life, if their views and requirements don't match their own.

I sometimes think these people just enjoy berating people, for very little reason besides their own enjoyment.

A lot never learnt their old grandmothers good advice - "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all!". [:-)

Cheers, Ron.

When it all boils down, to know the weather is an advantage, the rest is not important and many travel away from it all to escape from it as some comments have indicated.
No one is belligerant or being nasty or berating people. That concept is formed in the minds of the readers of the comments and many then also jump on the wagon for the ride.
Folk who never question and follow like sheep are difficult to understand.
It's got nothing to do with my grandmother. Grandmothers are usually old anyway, aren't they?

What's wrong in using your AM radio before dawn and after dusk . Add a long piece of wire to your antenna and save you Satphone in case you need it . Think about how you will get to Camp 1A from Macc's reserve without getting lost . To me that is a ridiculous question to ask and im saying that as i have read your other posts which a similar on other sites

With an equally ridiculous answer. Someone asks a fair dinkum question and the drongos of this world tell him not to be so stupid. I,d hate to be sitting around a camp fire with some of you mob.

Siringo, we live in a digitally-connected world today, and phoning in to get specific information, such as news or sports results, is virtually a thing of the past.

I know of no phone numbers today in Australia, where you can get news or sports results via a phone link.

Just getting to any major business operatives on a phone, is a huge effort today.
You generally have to negotiate a range of menus via the keypad - and if you're dead lucky, you actually get a real person to talk to, after punching in about 16 separate keypad sub-menus.

Then, if you're even luckier, that person is actually in the business premises, and actually speaks in an accent you can understand.

Most times, you're speaking to someone in a 3rd world country with an accent you can barely understand.

It's a sad fact of life, that the cost of manning phones today, is one major cost area, that companies and businesses select as the area where the greatest cost-cutting has to be done.

It won't be long before there will be no-face-to-face contact in any major business, or Govt Dept.
You will quite likely be relegated to conducting your enquiry or business online only - and quite possibly dealing with an automated computer programme, run by AI.

What I find interesting is that you can place a bet here by phone - but you can't find the results by phone.

Somewhat surprisingly, America has a sports results phone number. It does appear to rely on sponsors for its operation.

Telecompute (USA) - free sports call

Cheers, Ron.

Could you share the weather phone numbers you mentioned? Might come in handy during an extended off-grid trip such as the AB. :)

Sorry, I can't help you with the sports or news phone numbers!

Easy, simply ask if any one has the sport or news update. People are always up for a chat and you could even ask if anyone has a footy score or cricket update, or ask what on in the news. Many people will have recently heard the news reports, listen in front of a computer or will have mobile coverage.

The beauty of HF is everyone can listen and respond.

They'd also have to have it switched on and scanning / the right channel and paying attention I guess.

I know they are a bit old school - but I like the redundancy of having it when all else fails. Also great for talking to people nearby and finding out road conditions/hazards, localised weather etc etc.

I will only get rid of mine when the Network shuts down.

Speaking of which - VKS subs are due - better pay up.

Cheers

Anthony
