Just enquired and received permits for a trip from the Tanimi to Kiwirrkurra via Balgo and onto Alice Springs. Now someone has stated that Yagga Yagga is a closed community. Anybody got any info on this trip? Cant see why they would have issued the permit if I cant drive there.

Yagga Yagga was abandoned some years ago now, it is deserted. Most of the buildings are still there and even some of the batteries. You could easily spend a hour or more just looking around.

There is very good water at Dwarf Well including a bath GPS 22 25.724S 127 59.838E, people have camped there. The camp spot at Lake McKay is GPS 22 36.472S 128 21.316E. Its a bit sandy and there is no wood there.

Thanks mate. Thought it was abandoned. We'll be taking our own wood.

Hi Chris,
I believe the mill and bath on the main road is Dwarf Bore. I have stood in the remains of Dwarf Well at 22 16 4.6. and 128 01 54.7. It is a circular dry depression about 1m diameter and 40 cm deep.
According to one of the T.O.s who was one of the Pintubi 9 from that area it was a narrow and very deep well when in use.
All the best, Graham.

I should clarify that we were permitted. Also our small group stopped about 50 m away and walked with a GPS to the spot to keep the area pristine.
Cheers, Graham

Balgo Pound is an impressive sight south of Balgo.

The bathtub at Dwarf Bore.

Lake Mackay.

Lake Mackay campsite.

A white tyre marks the track at the southern end near Kiwirrkurra.

A good place to camp on the Gary Junction Road between Kiwirrkurra and Kintore is Dovers Hills south of the road.

Combining Balgo Road with the Sandy Blight Junction Track works well if you have the time.

Cheers,
John
