Glory be! The 3-30 June amber zone exclusion period was cancelled. So this opens up the possibility for me to drive from CP out to Emu and back. Except of course I don't have permits.

Since I am only planning to go as far as Emu, I only need the Defence and MT permits. The time slot I'm looking at is 17 to 22 June. ( I don't expect it to take that long, just leaving wiggle room in case of weather issues, etc.)

In some old forum threads, it was suggested that one can call and apply for or expedite processing of these permits. Does anyone have those phone numbers? Or can you suggest an approach that would help me get these permits in time? Thanks in advance.

P.S. I am doing the Maralinga tour in a few days. Does Robin still make his inspection trips from Maralinga to Emu? Maybe I can tag along? LOL

You can download the forms, fill them out and send them back, I got mine pretty quickly, couple of weeks, providing your not carrying UAV / Drones.

How did you submit it? Did you scan the completed form and email it?

Thanks. I am in Wirrulla at the moment, just got off the Gawler Ranges Road. Have been thinking about ways to actually submit these forms, lol.

I need to print them out and sign them. I'm headed to Ceduna so I should be able to do that there, somewhere. And then I need to either scan them or, as you did, photograph them.

The local library is a good place to start, Candace, for free WiFi & maybe scanners & printers.

I like iPads as you can do much of this work with them...........even down to signing the document, though the signature may bear little resemblance to your "official" example!

I actually took care of the MT permit application in person at their office. The ladies there also recommended the library as a place I could get some help with doing the other application.

The permit is included with the tour booking. So you don't need to pay or arrange anything separately. They provide a detailed map showing the specified route to get between the Eyre Highway and Maralinga Village.

Candace.

The road from Maralinga to Emu has completely closed now. Not even Robin will take you on it.

The closest alternative is the Cook to Volkes Corner road. You will need permission for that. It adds about 450km to the trek.

Current status: Today, 21 May, I stopped by the MT office in Ceduna and filled out the permit application. And paid the $25 fee.

Then I went to the library, where I printed out the Defence form. Filled it out and took a picture of it with my phone. Emailed that to the address which is in the form instructions. I got a reply email in about 5 minutes, with the approved permit attached! Can't get much more expedited than that! :)

So now I'm waiting for the MT permit to be approved. The ladies at the office seemed to think it will be done in time, no worries.

Another update: while I was at Maralinga this week for my tour, I of course mentioned to Robin my plans to visit Emu via the AB. Without me asking, he made a phone call, and verified the permit has been signed. It should be sent to me soon.
