Hi Axle

South Australia stopped the renewal windscreen labels in 2011. When the renewal arrives, I put it on the fridge and I know that I have 30 days to make sure that I renew it.

There was a big cry that mechanics could get get caught out driving an unregistered call, which is not correct.

Any person can go online to the EzyReg site and type in the rego number and it will tell you immediately the make, colour and expiry date of the vehicle.

Cheers

You shouldn’t have to pay a mechanic $100 an hour to go online to check vehicle registration details!

If anyone believes a rego sticker means that the vehicle is currently registered before he drives it is remiss. A sticker does not prove currency of registration.

Shaker

The Technician would only do it to save his own skin and just to be sure that the vehicle he may take for a test drive after the service is registered if it has not gone through the service department system.

As for paying $100 per hour, it takes less than 1 whole minute to complete the task and if it took any longer, he must be totally dumb and you would not want him working on your vehicle. It would take him far longer to read the service sheet notes about the vehicle that he is about to start work on.

I also know some workshops use the person that books your vehicle in to perform that very simple and easy task, and they make notes on the service sheet for the technician to read, with a simple tick in the registered square.

Once again no big deal and only a big task if you can not use a computer.

Here is the online rego check for Qld and it is very easy to use with no bureaucratic gobble D gook .

Western Australia was the first - around 2010. Good move. For those who aren't organised enough to budget for their bills the month due (we still get paper renewal notices in the mail about six weeks prior to renewal date) so no problem about not knowing), they can send additional reminders by SMS or email.

There is no need for them Shaker. The serve no useful purpose.

Police cars now have number plate recognition, so do not need to look at stickers for currency, but having a sticker with a month on it did not proved that vehicle was registered anyway.

Easy to manage. Pay on line from anywhere in Australia. Registration legally renewed - too easy.

What do you like about them Shaker?

WA govt has a website called DotDirect.

It shows all renewal dates for all your vehicles, including boats, caravans, even jetties (if you have a jetty).

You can arrange email alerts for renewals and pay online.

All very easy.

I liked the fact that it was a constant reminder of the renewal date, also if I had to drive another vehicle I knew immediately if the registration was current, that includes loan cars, potential purchases etc. Remember the onus is on the driver to ensure the currency of the registration, not the owner! Having a label wouldn’t prevent online renewals.
I also didn’t notice reduction in my registration costs for them being omitted.

No dramas looking up the rego details on line, unless you're disabled, or one of the many in their '60's, '70's & '80's who struggles with a computer!

I worked with people with a disability who drive & actually supervise others with more profound disabilities. Most would have no clue how to check their work vehicle's rego & would just pay the fine when it arrived. These are people on about $4-$5 per hour who struggle in everyday life anyway.

The stickerless system presents no problems for me, but what about those with different personal circumstances to mine & yours?

Plenty of other and much better ways to remind yourself to budget for renewal than a sticker Shaker. Put a sticky note on the fridge if you need a prompt.

The sticker does nothing to prove the vehicle is registered.

We were paying on line for quite some time before stickers were abandoned in Western Australia. They just posted the sticker out. In fact I used to have file full of them - being computer generated, I got stickers for motor cycles, tractors trailers as well.

Kevin, in Western Australia and probably in the other states, nothing much has changed, we still get a paper bill and pay on that as before. You need that (or use lookup on line) to pay by any method. No need to be computer savvy or have a computer.

In your example, sticker or no sticker makes no difference. If unable to read, they will have the same problems with any method. If they know to pay the fine, they would know to pay the renewal. Some people need help with different tasks. I had a career working with community based organisations supporting people with disabilities to live and work in their communities.

Have to agree with Motherhen. The sticker does not mean that your vehicle is in current registration. Used car dealers had drawers full of stickers which, if you were a bit friendly, would supply any one you wanted. The excuse was broken windshield.

Likewise Gronk :), and I'm the same for most of us.

For those who don't have computers, nothing has changed. Pay as they did before. If they don't have postal service, they would never have got renewal notices to pay on anyway, although you cannot register a vehicle without a valid address.

I never said that the people involved can't read. They just struggle with anything technological.

The renewal is not theirs to pay. They don't receive any renewal notice, because they don't own the vehicle. They drive to work, collect their truck/Ute at the depot & off they go for the day, working harder than most of the people who read this will ever do in their lifetime.

Yes, they do need help with different tasks, but do they get it? Not anywhere near as much as they should!

I too had a career working with a community based organisation supporting people with disabilities to work in their community.

Sadly, I didn't see the kind of support that you're alluding to.

So that has nothing to do with them getting fined for not renewing their regos.

You probably also saw a number of big changes to funding over your career. None of these were advantageous changes to the service users. However this is all off topic for this thread.

It has EVERYTHING to do with them getting fined for driving unregistered vehicles.

How the heck can they check the rego on their work vehicle if there's no sticker & they don't have the skills to check on line before they drive it?

The driver gets fined, not the owner.

They loose demerits too.

I see what you mean Kevin. But stickers or no stickers, these drivers are put into that situation by an employer who should be looking after their employees, as well as being ethical and keeping their vehicles registered.

Bottom line is stickers do not necessarily mean the vehicle's registration is current.

Motherhen, I reckon it was years and years before 2010. I seem to recall my father complaining about this and he died in 1987!

I don't reckon I've applied a new sticker on a vehicle for decades. I'm surprised other states are only just doing away with them. Gives the lie to WA standing for Wait Awhile.

Yes Paul - WA stands for Way Ahead ;) - the first with this idea and other states follow. But we did have rego stickers until late 2009. You could get fined for not having one showing and fined for having an expired one still one - and they could be horrors to remove.

98% of people today (apart from the few old dinosaurs who refuse to keep up with modern technology) have smartphones.

All smartphones have a calendar app, with a reminder feature.
It doesn't take much to set up a reminder on your phone for when your rego is due.

In addition, the Transport Dept of W.A. give you the option of them sending you SMS reminders, or email reminders, when your rego (or MDL) is due.

It's just not that hard to do without windscreen decals. I, for one, don't miss the often awkward, and time-consuming routine, of getting old decals off, and new ones fitted.

W.A. licence alert (MDL and vehicle)

Cheers, Ron.

They haven't been discontinued for heavy vehicles in NSW, not sure about other states.
My motorhome has a GVM of 7 tonne is categorised as a heavy vehicle, requiring a LR licence, and has a windscreen sticker. New vehicle and first registered Dec 2017.

As others have noted, SA discontinued stickers some years back.

So, now I don't get a sticker for the boat trailer, but still get one for the boat - go figure.

Many years back I used to work in Victoria Square, Adelaide. When walking to the Red Cross blood bank on East Terrace (about 800m) it would be normal to see 3 or 4 vehicles parked at the kerb with out-of-date stickers.

Its good because you used to be able to get booked for having an out of date sticker on the screen even if you had paid the rego. I must admit, I was a bit lax in scraping the old one off and putting the new one on, I thought it was a pain in the backside. Now, my backside is relatively painless. :-)

I am from Victoria, Last year when my rego was due I was away on a trip. Somehow I overlooked the letter sent to me and then proceeded to drive around for 10 months with no rego. Only discovered when I went to get the car serviced, and was informed it was unregistered. It seems in Victoria if you have the renewal sent out via the post you get NO REMINDERS that you have not paid. HOWEVER if you elect to receive the renewal via email, they send out TWO reminders. I dont even remember when each car is registered anymore as with no sticker you have no visual prompting. The good thing was that I "saved" about $600 in rego and insurance, and the RWC only cost $125 as the car was being serviced at the same time. For once I got the better of the Victorian money grabbing government departments!!! Albeit lucky I had no accident.

In NSW you can get an on-line account with RMS. Yout vehicle regos get linked to that account. You then get email and SMS reminders of rego renewal.

Handy as that is, though, the NSW requirement for annual mechanical inspection for caravans and vehicles for rego renewal does not make it easy if your renewal comes up while you're interstate.

In Qld you can have it automatically paid by direct debit. You still get a paper reminder but it has "This renewal will be paid by direct debit as arranged. Ensure there are sufficient funds" printed on it. Makes it very easy, no forgetting.

no the vehicle did not have a rego label ( they had been dropped by then) but I have no problems remembering when I have to fork out amounts in excess of a thousand dollars.
like wise I also know when my annual rates and health insurance premiums are due.

I had a similar issue with a RMS branch couple years ago
Got the pink slip done nice and early..
And i went to see them about paying the rego as i was due to go NT alice... oh i love you , for a job..
And the pricks wouldn't give it to me.
Even though they admit the mail out was really late.
They still wouldn't do anything.
I couldn't just pay the rego their and then...nope
I had like a day left on my pink slip by the time it came through the mail, and i was well and truly in alice by then !
Its really hard when your rego is due and your in another state.
They should just make it a simple procedure where you can go to a local shop and get the pink slip for another state done.
No idea if this can be done.
Id hate to be in WA and have to drive all the way back to keep my rego.
Short term work periods...

Mountainman,

I asked RTA (as it was then) a few years ago about this. They said you could get a roadworthy inspection done at any place that is approved for that purpose in the state you're in, then send all the paperwork in the mail, yada, yada, yada.

The rego and the CTP green slip you can do on line from anywhere, but that pink slip will not be on line if it's not done in NSW and that's where the hassle is.

Wouldn't it be nice if all states had the same requirements and on line processing. Pigs might fly.

No road worthies required in SA (even for our 6.6T GVM OKA) and the rego/third party can be paid on line from anywhere in the world.

When we have been away for months at a time, the rego expires on Margaret's shopping trolley and we register it on line the day we get home and all is good.

I recently re registered our trailer on line after it had sat unregistered for 9 years.
