NSW Road Trip Ideas/Advice.

Hey Guys and Girls,
It's coming to that time of year again where I am planning on a road trip for the family and I into NSW. We are departing from gympie, heading out via stanthorpe/warwick region, and heading down into mid western NSW.
We would LIKE to make it to Bega, but Canberra is on the wife's to do list.
But basically, overnight or a couple of night camping spots where we can daytrip out and see and do things with the kids would be nice.
I have 0 idea about what to do down south, and would love some ideas.
Girraween NP would probably be one of the first stops for us. After that, no real plans at the moment. We will head back up the coast home over a few days.
Is there any gemstone tours/areas in NSW that would be recommended?
We will be in the faithful tent again this year :) It worked well for our trip last year up north, and I am sure it will suffice again this year, although we are towing a trailer this time to limit the risk of wet luggage on the roof of the prado.
Thanks for any advice, and we are loving the touring around areas we never thought we would venture.

P.S. This is just a quick thought of where we might head, but anywhere else suggested would be great.

Depends when you are leaving, but inland NSW can have very cold nights from now on. Would suggest you have winter diesel in your Prado, have experienced the results of diesel gel.
A diversion into Glen Innes/Inverell could be interesting if you wish to do a bit of fossicking. Bullock Mountain Homestead 20 km. from Glen Innes is one place you could enquire.
There is a very nice camp spot ~20km. before Moree off the Gwyder hwy. signposted Gum Flat Reserve. Big open area alongside the river.
You have set an interesting route which I am sure you will enjoy. Not sure if it is open for inspection, but the new Solar power station at Nyngan could be worth a look.

winter diesel? does this become available as i head south into NSW or whats the go with that?

Leaving mid Sept. you should be ok.
The problem often happens when you leave home with both tanks full (I think prado has dual tanks?) get into a winter chill location, fill the part used tank then switch to the tank filled at home (summer fuel).
Next morning that summer fuel tank has turned to gel and you don't go no where!
Catches people going from Sydney to the snowfields quite regularly.

so its just in the diesel bowsers where it needs to be or is there 2 different bowsers or how does it work? never heard it before up here :P

I haven't noticed it anywhere except close to the snow fields in NSW or Victoria. They have pumps for alpine diesel in the closest towns. It gets bloody cold up around Guyra and Armidale, but is alpine diesel even available up there?

When you leave Canberra on your way to Bega you could go via Braidwood then Bendethera then out by Moruya then down to Bega (it’s on ExplorOz trip sites) if you walk to the caves take good torches

It's 4WD country through there. Is it suitable to take a box trailer through there?

You can tow into Bendethera from Moruya. It's pretty steep but a nice road. All other entrances have banned towing because they are steeper and less well maintained. It's a lovely spot.

Mt Kaputar N/P would be worth a look, if you're near Narrabri. It's a few kms to the east.

Warrumbungles are spectacular, between Toorawenah and Coonabarabran. The usual touristy spots in Blue Mountains, if the weather's clear, and a trip to Jenolan Caves as well.

Western Plains Zoo is good for both big & little kids!

Seeing you are around Stanthorpe check out bald rock at Boonoo boonoo nat park ( pronounced bunna boonoo) while you are looking at girraween nat park

You could go through Texas from Stanthorpe or go down to Tamworth and on. I see Moree mentioned but from many years of bad things happening, I avoid it like the plague.

Just so much to see and I haven't even got past Tamworth. Will be there shortly for the Australian national cutting horse championship.

Anything specific you want to do at Wagga MG? If not give it a miss and save the time for Canberra.
Off the top of my head here are some must dos and highlights in and around Canberra (P-Pay to enter, F-Free entry. Parking fees may apply):
Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve(P) . A lovely drive via Cotter Dam (stop at the picnic area and do the walk to the viewing platform). At the Nature Reserve there are picnic/bbq areas, walks, animals to see with the bonus of going to the spectacular space tracking station (F) with its small space museum and cafe, just down the road. You can see the dish on your left as you drive towards Tidbinbilla. Go there first maybe. Allow 1 day. You can camp at Cotter also.
F: National Museum, Black Mtn tower and/or Mt Ainslie lookouts, War Memorial, Botanic Gardens, Arboretum, Parliament House, The Mint. All within a 20 minute drive of each other. You could easily spend a couple of hours or more at each.
P: Questacon, National Gallery, Dinosaur Museum and Cockington Green.
Might still be chilly in mid Sept in Canberra.
