Grafton is about half way. The highway south of that has undergone a vast upgrading. Most of the good rest areas have gone and nothing has replaced them yet.

There is Half Way Creek (27 km S of Sth Grafton.) I'm not sure of its current status. There was a good large parking area to the east of the Coles Shell service centre plus some other ground that was used as a camping ground. The main roads rest area may be back in operation, it's just after the SS.

Coopernook State Forest is a free camp off the highway and is free. It is on wikicamps and is just north of Taree.

Yep, still there, although a fee is payable....used to be approx $10/night.
Very nice spot though, next to a creek.
