A ‘catch-cry’ of most state police forces’ around Australia is “RBT, anywhere, anytime”.

On a recent trip to the Gulf Savannah I was somewhat surprised whilst travelling the Burke Development Road towards Dunbar. At 7:30 in the morning I was stopped by police for a random breath test at the Walsh River, about 40-kilometres west of Chillagoe.

Not that I have a problem with that – but they sure do mean it when they say, anywhere, anytime…

They were on their way to Koowanyama, and making the most of the trip, seemingly…!

Last year there was a RBT on top of Mt. Skene during the snow season. Checking for permits and 0.05.

Baz, I have been pulled up all over Australia in the most remote places, anytime or anywhere. One thing I always do is be very polite and not be a smart arse. The coppers appreciate that and normally I have a good yarn with them if I wasn't pushed for time.

They were professional, but friendly. I actually had a chat with one of them at the roadhouse the previous afternoon.

Cheers, Baz

Contrary to Baz's experience, we have just completed a 21 500 km loop from Toowoomba across to the Pilbara and back across the Nullabor and home through Vic High Country and Western NSW. We saw very few Police on the roads and had one breath test near Swan Hill in Vic. We were quite surprised. Mind you, in the eighties, I was breath tested midway between Muckadilla and Roma at 6.00 am on Good Friday.

How old are you now if tested in the eighties, or was that the 1980's and not your 80's?

We also travelled 11, 758 klms from NSW, SA,NT, WA

to Kalbarri before we saw our first patrol car, went over to them as they were booking a caravanner, probably for speeding as it was a 50 zone, said your the first patrol car, your kidding he said, nope.

Probably having to do long distances, struth, the distance between towns was extraordinary, we've never seen so many straight sections of road, crest one of a dozen, and the road just goes straight into the distance.

No wonder we never saw patrol cars, they need to camp overnight

Some do camp overnight with swags and fridges in their vehicles. Have been tested 5 times in a row at the St Lawrence turn off. Same policeman, I said I will ring through and let you know what time I will be passing so you don't have to wait. He had a big chuckle.

Have been licence, book checked and bagged twice about half way along on the Kynuna Middleton Rd. I think I was favourite of the year at Mattaranka as I seemed to have a permanent booking spot with them.

I really could go on and on but the police can be anywhere and boy do I know it. One thing I find, is the middle aged police are the easiest going regarding flexibility and politeness. The worst are ones in their late 20's or early 30's that have a lady young officer with them. Some and I do mean some, seem to want to puff themselves up like a stuffed peacock.

Guess we were all young once and showed off a bit.

I was pulled over and breath tested on the beach at Fraser Island. They were booking one guy. Not remote I know but anywhere anytime for sure.

Whilst doing an west/east run of the Simpson Desert in 2014 came across these two fellas on patrol. As you say they can be anywhere at anytime.

What permit do you need in QLD to be driving in the Simpson Desert? There's a camping fee per night...

QLD Parks officers and QLD Police also check SA Desert Parks Pass apparently.
If you come out of the SA section without a pass they can somehow issue a penalty, or maybe they just take info and refer this to SA Parks to issue fines.
I've been told that by people that have been pulled over by those and the SA Parks people checking permits, personally in 6 or 7 times through I have never seen an authority in SA or QLD parks, let alone been checked.

Yes it was a joint qps / npws setup. They checked pretty much everything including our desert parks passes. They had a couple of dui's already by the time we got there.

Yep, too many think the desert is ok to have a few (too many).
I've had a few trips through with groups where some have enjoy beverages from about noon, and although seemingly ok in their driving would possibly be a little over the legal limit.
Personally I look forward to waiting for camp, and having the first icy cold beer while packing and setting up camp.

For me it was midway between Coopers Creek and Windorah a few years ago. I blew "000" but certainly a wake up call.

Was in Birdsville a few years back, Baz, for a weekend of horse sports, Bronco Branding & Rodeo. So were the Traffic Branch from Mt Isa! :-)

Got tested on way out to the rodeo grounds, then retested on return to town, a few hours later. Shortly after this, got tested again, when heading for the grounds again. Don't recall how many times I had to blow in the machine over the weekend, but was zero each time.

Back when I was doing linehaul work out of Longreach, the Police Task Force used to occasionally(some would say regularly) block the road over the Thomson River, so ALL vehicles had to pass through their road block for testing. Returned to Longreach one morning about daylight, got the usual logbook & breath test, and carried on into town. Within an hour, I was in my ute, pulled up again & tested, on my way back home.

There's a lot to be said for being sober in a vehicle.

The Longreach ' road block' still happens on a regular basis usually twice per year during the season , Muttaburra residents know exactly when the blockade is 'on' due to the substantial increase of truck traffic through town .... as an aside , 57 speeding tickets issued in Illfracombe in the space of 3 hrs on the Monday prior to the Birdsville races , highest speed 87 in the 50 zone by a 'fool' in a Land cruiser towing a Bushtracker who 'just' missed out by a mouthful with a reading of .047 at 10am.......
