UHF Radio

Microphones are the weak point, maybe after aerials, of any UHF, John.

I'll donate a clutch of sucking pigs to the orphanage if it's not in the lead of the mike, or the PTT switch.

Hey John I have GME with remote mic and had the exact same problem could receive but could not transmit.
This was a year or about 18 months ago.
There was a known problem with this unit and if I remember rightly it was a diode or resistor or something that was blown,rang GME and they repaired it but charged me because it was 6 or 7 years old and out of warranty,I may still have the paper work.
It was not a problem with the mic. I suggest you ring GME first.

I had the same problem with my GME TX3440 on my last trip, took it to a radio tech and he tested it, but before I took it there he said it's probably the transmitting chip, said it was a common problem. Anyhow that's what was wrong with it so I bought an new 80 channel radio instead. Not saying that's what's wrong with yours but it could be.

As you haven't advised whihc model you have bit hard to narrow down to specific model GME have several types of radio with channel selection capability and display in the range.

easiest soloution see if you can grab another mic from somebodyelse see what happens if not the mic then its component failure and off to the bench tech for servicing.

The downside of this servicing is costs about same as purchasing a new radio $250 was last fixed price servicing I paid on a vertex land mobile.

Do pay for what you get with most UHF CB radios going around a few exceptions though

And....if you do need to get a new radio, consider one with the 'micro-techno'* bits back in the main body...I'm sure that mike would have heaps of delicate micro components that are easily damaged in use. Even though it can be difficult to find a mounting place for the larger body radios, reliability is vital.
As an aside...re a 12v to twin USB cig plug adaptor of mine that failed (only $13 :-)...I was amazed at the complexity inside...p circuit board, lots of small and tiny thingamies* soldered in...probably entitled to fail after a year or two of vibration and knocks.
*as you've guessed, NASA won't need my help any time soon.
And2...while GME is a great Aussie brand with lots of happy users, don't discount Icom and Uniden...also great function and reliability.

I have a GME TX6150 5 watt hand held. On a couple of recent trips our little convoy decided to use ch22. We could hear the others but they couldn't hear us. Reverted to my little 1 watt hand held and no problem except for limited range.
Happened again a year later so I looked at manual.
Guess what. Transmission is inhibited on chs 22, 23 (Selcall/telemetry use) and 61, 62 and 63 for Guard band channel as per regulations.
Saved me a lot of frustration and puzzlement when I found out. Hope this info is useful for you.

You need to familiarise yourself with the appropriate UHF channels.

If button beep is on, a channel which can't transmit will beep twice when you press to talk. So knowing that is useful if you forget which channels not to use. Of course, don't forget that chs 5 and 35 are reserved for emergency use.
Your question had me scouring through the manual but with some leisure rather than trying to work it out on the run. I learnt a lot. So thanks for the catalyst.
