Apparently using "arses" is okay on this forum

This is NOT acceptable in my house and that's what the grand children (10 year olds) say also. They found it not me. Apparently the mdsquads do find it okay.Well that's what they told me.

It's a shame that the site has lowered itself to this level.

Good bye to my friends and thanks for the chats to the others.

Sorry to hear that you're taking your bat 'n ball Phil, and going home.

Like us, the Mods are only human, and it's easy to miss the odd mistake. Am sure they don't read EVERY thread, to check for clangers.

Take care,

Gday
That word was used in a reply to my post by a non member ,we also try to keep the conversation on a level keel with the young ones around us , specially on wednsday nights.
Sorry to see vk go. His profile has been removed .By himself i suppose.
Maybe we should have a system that removes rude words before they come up on the screen . That shouldnt be to hard for a computer person.

There is such a system in place, Muz, and on the more naughty words like "5&$@/()", "7$8@?/2", $h!t & p!$$, they are blotted out. Didn't think anyone would get in a tizz over "arse". Like, everyone's got one, eh!

The same children probably read the Yankee version which is ASSES and think nothing of it.

To me an ASS is a donkey.

The American idea of something bigger or better is Kick Ass. Many children see that all the time and accept it. Not sure why Yanks want to associate the idea with wanting to kick donkeys.
Batteries for vehicles are sold as KickAss batteriesand advertised as such.

Explaining the relativity to children may be a good idea because censorship isn't going to alter it for them.

As far "kickass" in advertising, I try not to buy anything using such stupid kiddy type of language in Oz.

And you certainly know how to make one of yourself on the way out.

It's more of a pity that sanctimonious windbags who think they are bigger than the forum have to have their "look at me....look at me" attention seeking posts. You'll be back. You always are. This is about the third time you've pulled this stunt.

How about showing some maturity and looking back through the forum where you will find posts on this very topic asking for the language rules to be relaxed to allow words that are considered common Aussie Vernacular.

With this sort of pious bulltish, good riddance to you.

Greetings All

I don't know Phil but I have read many of his posts and he is obviously an intelligent and experienced well traveled bloke and I certainly have learned a few things from him - but to pull out of this forum for that reason is a bit childish !

I certainly wish my biggest troubles in life were as major as the use of word arse in a sentence that most Aussies would have used at some time or another in their life !!

" get your arse over here "

All the best to you Phil !

Happy, safe and slang free travels

Cheers

If the use of such a word causes him to leave the forum then shopping centres ,public transport etc will be well out of bounds as swearing is the daily norm. By all means register your disapproval but withdrawing is an over reaction to say the least. I would suggest that for someone who has been a valued contributor for a long period to roll their swag and move on because of one post mentioning one word he must have been unhappy with the forum for some time. People in general don't make hasty moves over such small matters, usually they make a complaint or two before they make the move. I hope Phil finds a place where he is happy and that no one uses any bad language.
Cheers Ian

Gee, I've been away for a while. Log in this morning, and Wow! What's happening? A storm in a tea cup.
Got to agree with Baz 100%. It's a real real world out there and I've had my bum kicked a few times. . . . .well what else am I going to call it?
My wife was a high school teacher and kids in the playground used extremes of language. But the rules inside were strictly about respect
As an educator she was respected in the classroom, as in her home. But she realised the real world of kids growing up, had to grow up.
As long as the language was not directed at her and it was never intentionally spoken in her presence. The kids in her class loved her, respected her and gave 100% when it came to exam time. Well balanced little citizens.
Phil, If you want the kids to love you . . . . just laugh it off or you'll become a bore.
I sometimes question my sanity . . . . and then it answers back.

Good day forumites.

For the sake of clarity and so you will feel safe in the knowledge that censure still exists here in EO land, the EO forum has employed an automatic "heavy duty" language filtering system since it's inception. That means that certain 'naughty' words like bleep and bleep are automatically detected and replaced with a bleep. See, it works really well.

Some time back, due to many requests from forum users, David and Michelle reviewed the offensive language library and made the decision to exclude certain words that are considered common place in the Australian language. Words like 'bum', 'arse' and 'shit' on reflection, are considered to have become deeply rooted in the Australian lexicon and might only be considered offensive in certain contexts. Indeed the Australian vernacular forms a critical component in Australian writing and expression and often adds a richness and Aussie flavour to stories, posts, blogs and the likes. It's these stories and information that make this forum such a great resource.

The language review was discussed with the moderation team and forum users at the time.

Regardless, offensive language is still detected and bleeped. If it isn't 'bleeped', then it's OK or it's a word that we haven't heard of yet :-)

With all that ails our modern world, it's a shame that such a minor issue has caused such a tanty.

Regards,

The squad.

The official dictionary for Australia is the Macquarie Dictionary - now I dont have one in front of me but I would set the standard to be, if the word is in that dictionary then it is OK to use in the forum.

I assume the really norty ones are not in there but I bet the type being discussed here are.

And I just had to look up some naughty words , arse is there for sure , but also the other couple of common ones starting with f and c . But if your broadminded it's quite a laugh reading how you can use the f word especially. But I don't think we should start using them all here just yet.

I wonder if he realises most don't give a "Rat's" one of them if he leaves. I hear the same word, and a lot worse, on 6 o'clock TV. In regards exposing children to such a word, we always discuss that, and the use of slang, to context and just what impression and what message you are trying to convey. Something about using an extensive vocabulary to converse. In my view, it is perfectly acceptable on this forum to use such words.

Yeah, Phil is battling along with health issues that most of us are lucky enough not to have. Don't be too quick to "bag" him.

In recent times he & his wife have done a solo crossing of the Simpson, and later a solo Madigan trip, all in a restricted time span so he could return for further treatment. So he's not short of "guts".

Maybe he'll be back, maybe he won't, but I'll be happy to welcome him back. He's on a journey none of us would care to share with him!

What makes Exploroz different from other blogs and forums and groups is the lack of swearing and language or posts with rubbish . Where to draw a line is difficult. Good spirited bantering or civil difference of opinion is good but once it gets personal or plain foul mouthed it should stop. There are lots of other places where name calling and swear words are in every sentence for whoever is into that . I would hate to see Exploroz spiral down to the level of some other clubs or groups or pages.
Keep it clean and funny and for families.

.

There are some very inappropriate expressions being made here by persons who undoubtedly know little about Phil and his health battles and have very little sensitivity.

Phil was upset about his young grandchildren seeing a crude expression on this forum. He complained to the Moderators about it but was told that the post would stand. It seems that moderation has been somewhat relaxed in recent times!
Understandably, Phil was upset and withdrew.

In view of the flaming and expressions that are now going on I consider that it would be proper if the Moderators promptly removed this thread.

Thanks Allan your concerns are noted and we have been dealing with small side spats as they occur. If those were considered to be a major issue or were escalating out of control, we will consider locking the thread. Moderation is not warranted at this point and would be arbitrary if undertaken.

We are cognisant of Phil's health issues as he has ensured we are all fully aware of them on both in the forum and in communications with management and the mod team. That aside, the first rule of participation in this forum is -self control and self moderation. If Phil has made a decision around a single word and cannot abide by the rules of the site owners that were clearly communicated to him, his decision and actions in making a very public statement was perhaps ill advised.

It is important it is for us not to overly moderate and let people be responsible for their posts providing they are within the forum guidelines and rules. It's not for you or us to cherry pick what we want moderated. If it contravenes the rules, moderation will be considered and may be enacted.

Hope that makes it clearer.

Regards

The moderation team.

It's a curious abberation that seems only to occur in english ........ that it is inaceptable to use words like shit and arse, but it is perfectly acceptable to use the word poo and backside.

Shit and arse are proper words of reasonable origin that are accurate and discriptive.

It is not the words them selves that we should be concerned about it is how they are used in context.

It is entirely possible to be rude, tasteless, unkind and nasty, using perfectly normal permisable words.

start censoring words bassed only in isolation and we see innocent words targeted bassed on their misuse.

Phil gave an opinion about the use of words he has problems with and he is entitled to do that. He gave his reasons why the word upset him and withdrew.

Now some have given reasons why they have no problems with the words and gave the reasons why.

From my side of the fence, it is the people who attacked the OP that should have a look at what they wrote. You just have to love social media.

What appeals to my sense of humour are the comments suggesting that someone has a 'problem' so their behaviour should be excused.

That seems to me to be the reason why our society is going down the gurgler.

Too many excuses, not enough self control.

However that rule only applies if we 'like' the person, otherwise it's go in, boots and all.

What appeals to my sense of humour is people who think our society is going down the gurgler. By every measureable standard, it's better now than it was in the past. It may not seem like it due to the barrage of 24/7 microscopic analysis, but it is.

G'Day Michael,

Dare I say it - I can't help myself, opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one.

Yes, many aspects of society are considerably better than earlier times. However many are deteriorating rapidly, in my opinion anyway. Especially those to do with respect of others.

Many sections of the community are given far more respect now than they ever were in the past. Ask any woman, racial minority, religious minority or homosexual for starters. Take women for example, they may have forfeited their right to be given seating preferences before men, or to be allowed first through any doorway, but they now have the real opportunity to do whatever a man can do. To me that is far more respectful. There is still a long way to go on that front, but the respect for their ability has certainly risen, and rightly continues to do so.
If by respect you are simply talking about manners, then I believe that they are simply a fashion that constantly changes. In some societies I believe it is customary to burp after a meal to signify you enjoyed it. Burping in other societies is rude. Who's to say one or the other is right?
