General.
Today started early with the moon and one star peeking out from behind the clouds. Cool but invigorating. As all of today’s driving has been on black top, little to report on road conditions. The road into Winton continued single lane with me travelling ¾ of an hour before seeing another vehicle. Winton to Longreach good road and wall to wall caravans going in both directions. Longreach a bustling town with wide streets. Not sure if the activity is all caravaners or a local event. Winton had a street parade last night, missed it. The scenery gradually changing to wide open plains with few trees or tall shrubs. Longreach to Windorah the terrain very reminiscent of the area around Lyons River In WA. The landscape is in waves of sparsely covered red ground in dispersed with large areas of small red rocks reaching in to the distance on both sides. At Windorah I fuel up for the push to Birdsville but wait, ROAD CLOSED to Birdsville. At Longreach I had checked on road conditions with the info centre, all open as of 0900 today. What’s going on so back to the servo to find out, yea it’s open but very rough and slippery. Phew, I would be very unhappy if I came the long way round to find I could not get through. Tonight sleeping under a carpet of stars and a full moon rising. Already very cold so will rug up tonight. Tomorrow Birdsville, the elusive Birdsville.
